A photograph of Brian Fearn About the author
Brian Fearn English nurseryman Brian Fearn is the owner of the renowned Abbey Brook Cactus Nursery, Matlock, Derbyshire. An authority on succulent plants, he has grown and researched them since his youth. He has supplied plants to many countries around the world and celebrated the nursery’s Golden Jubilee in 2006.

A trailblazer in the conservation of succulent plants, he announced in 1962 that he would not deal in unpropagated wild collected plants and has championed the propagation and safeguarding of plants in cultivation ever since.

Born in 1937, Brian founded Abbey Brook while at Sheffield University where he received a BSc in Botany. His work on the genus Lithops aka ‘Living stones’ earned him an MSc in 1969 and also brought him international recognition.

He is the Holder of six Plant Heritage National Plant Collections® of succulent plant genera.

He is also widely known – as far afield as Japan – for his work in hybridising cacti, especially Echinopsis since the late 1960s.
